About

The Altenbernd Foundation is established as a nonprofit organization in the State of Florida and is pursuing recognition as a 501(c)(3) public charity. Officially launched in July 2026, the Foundation is developing educational programming, public initiatives, and strategic partnerships in support of its long-term mission.

Dedicated to the study, presentation, and appreciation of contemporary art, the Foundation develops educational initiatives, public programming, and strategic partnerships that encourage lifelong engagement with the art and ideas shaping our world. While contemporary art remains at the heart of our mission, we also recognize the enduring significance of modern art and its influence on today's artistic practices. From time to time, our educational resources, programs, and future exhibitions may include modern art when it provides meaningful historical context for understanding contemporary art.

Our work is focused primarily in Central Florida, where we seek to expand opportunities for individuals and communities to engage with contemporary art through exhibitions, education, dialogue, and collaboration. As the Foundation grows, we hope to establish a lasting presence in Central Florida while thoughtfully expanding select programs, partnerships, and initiatives into other regions, including New York's Hudson Valley, where they can further our mission and encourage cultural exchange.

The Altenbernd Foundation seeks to foster contemplation, curiosity, and exchange through contemporary art in places where global art dialogue continues to grow, enriching both local and international communities. With a forward-looking commitment to both established and emerging artists, the Foundation seeks to honor legacies while investing in the creators shaping the future.

Vision

The Altenbernd Foundation envisions a future in which contemporary art is thoughtfully interpreted, widely accessible, and meaningfully integrated into the communities we serve. As the Foundation evolves, we seek to become a leading educational and cultural resource by expanding public programs, supporting artists, advancing scholarship, and creating opportunities for dialogue across disciplines and cultures.

Our long-term vision is to establish a museum dedicated primarily to contemporary art in Central Florida, while thoughtfully incorporating select works of modern art that provide historical context and deepen an understanding of contemporary artistic practice. While embracing artistic voices, perspectives, and practices from around the world, we are especially interested in contemporary art from Latin America, particularly Brazil, the Caribbean, and Africa.

We believe a museum's collection should reflect the diversity, innovation, and global perspectives of contemporary art while preserving works that educate, inspire, and enrich future generations.

We envision a welcoming cultural destination where visitors experience exceptional exhibitions, attend artist talks and educational programs, explore a public art library, participate in workshops and lectures, discover opportunities for research and lifelong learning, and enjoy spaces designed for contemplation, conversation, and community. We believe contemporary art should be experienced not only through exhibitions, but also through education, scholarship, dialogue, and meaningful community engagement.

We also aspire to create meaningful opportunities that support artists throughout their careers by encouraging visibility, dialogue, collaboration, and professional growth, while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of the artistic community.

Beyond the exhibitions themselves, we envision inviting spaces for pause and reflection. A thoughtfully designed garden, a public art library, and a museum store featuring books, publications, and thoughtfully selected objects will encourage visitors to continue their experience beyond the exhibition itself.

We envision a museum where people from every background can see themselves reflected in the stories art tells. For Central Florida's diverse communities, including immigrants and first-generation families, we hope to create opportunities to connect with artists and artistic traditions that reflect their cultural heritage while also discovering the rich history and continuing evolution of modern and contemporary art in the United States. We believe these experiences encourage cultural understanding, inspire dialogue, and demonstrate how artistic ideas travel across borders while remaining deeply connected to place.

Accessibility is fundamental to every aspect of our vision. We are committed to creating experiences that welcome visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities through thoughtful design, inclusive programming, educational resources, and initiatives that reduce barriers to engaging with art.

We also aspire to contribute to a museum field that values ethical leadership, transparency, collaboration, and long-term sustainability. We believe strong cultural institutions are built through responsible stewardship, respect for artists and museum professionals, and meaningful partnerships that strengthen the arts for future generations.

As we work toward this vision, we welcome conversations with artists, architects, educators, cultural organizations, philanthropists, collectors, civic leaders, and community partners who share our belief in the transformative power of art and wish to help shape its future.

We also recognize that art continues to evolve. As new artistic practices, technologies, and movements emerge, we aspire to evolve alongside them while remaining committed to thoughtful scholarship, meaningful dialogue, and the artists shaping the future.
